Just like many organizations right now, a problem that the organization I am doing my practicum at is a staffing shortage. This effects everyone there. Right now we are all working long hours to cover the gaps where there is not staff. Our director of nursing is even scrubbing in surgeries and taking patients in PACU in order to keep the day running smoothly when there is not enough staff. Two implications this has on nursing is staff burnout and patient safety. When staff is working long hours and not getting their scheduled days off this can lead to burnout. Luckily this organization’s administration is great and does what they can to cover shifts. Patient safety is also an implication of nursing shortages (American Nurses Association, n.d.). When nurses are stretched too thin they cannot provide the adequate care that patients need.
